Background
The Queensland Tennis Centre (QTC) requires substantial redevelopment to meet the International Tennis Federation (ITF) requirements to ensure a successful Brisbane 2032 Games delivery. While the QTC was state-of-the-art when it originally opened in 2009, the facility now faces significant operational constraints, prompting Tennis Queensland and Stadiums Queensland to develop expansion plans in 2018/19.
Building on the 2018/19 expansion plans, Tennis Queensland developed an efficient and practical solution that delivers superior outcomes. This revised plan demonstrated Tennis’ commitment to fiscal responsibility while creating a world-class facility capable of hosting the Brisbane 2032 Games and serving as a legacy for Queensland tennis.
Project Goals
The purpose of this project is to ensure the QTC meets Olympic and Paralympic standards, preserves valuable existing infrastructure, and provides a lasting legacy for Queensland tennis. This expansion will include the development of a new 3,000 seat stadium, 10 new ITF-specification courts, 50% increase in player facilities and amenities, flood mitigation strategies, sustainable design features, and an optimised precinct layout.
REMPLAN’s Involvement
REMPLAN conducted an economic assessment to support Tennis Australia to demonstrate the potential economic impacts on the South East Queensland region and the State economies in relation to the proposed Queensland Tennis Centre Expansion project. The economic assessment builds on analysis and reporting conducted by REMPLAN for the Queensland Tennis Centre Expansion – Preliminary Business Case developed for Tennis Queensland in 2020. REMPLAN used REMPLAN regional economic modelling and analysis system to determine the economic impacts of the QTC project.
Results
The Queensland Tennis Centre Expansion project was successful and received funding for the new 3,000 seat show court arena and 12 new match courts. This expansion will bring more tournaments to Brisbane and allow greater future events to be held at the facility.
