Explore population growth

Designed to answer the frequently asked question, ‘what is our population?’, use the ERP Explorer to understand an area’s population and its changes over the past ten years. It’s a free tool that provides a quick and easy way to find the population of local government areas (LGAs) and SA2s in Australia.

The ERP Explorer uses estimated residential population (ERP) data published by the ABS and then displays both population change and its annualised growth rate over a ten year period for both LGAs and SA2s across the country.

Areas are displayed ranked against other locations either in Australia or within the relevant state or territory.

Explore JobSeeker recipient data

The number of JobSeeker recipients is any region is an indicator of underemployment, unemployment and general welfare need.  JobSeeker is a financial assistance program for people aged between 22 years and Aged Pension age, who are looking for work and who qualify under income and asset tests.  It also supports eligible people when they are sick or injured and cannot do their usual work or study for a short time.

Our JobSeeker Explorer has been designed to make it easy to find the percentage of the labour force that is in receipt of JobSeeker payments by either LGA or SA2 across the country.  Areas are ranked against other locations either in the relevant State/Territory or Australia.

Explore Housing Affordability

Housing affordability refers to the relationship between expenditure on housing and household incomes and, in Australia this has broadly declined since the early ‘80s. Of course, affordability differs between the states and territories and between capital cities and regional areas. The REMPLAN Housing Affordability Explorer provides insights into this important issue by providing a free and easy visualisation of mortgage and rental payments and their relationship with affordability for all LGAs and SA2s across Australia.

Utilising data from the 2021 ABS Census of Population and Housing, the Explorer presents estimates of the number of households where housing costs are more than or less than 30% of household income. Less than this threshold is the generally accepted level of housing affordability.

Areas are ranked against other locations either in the relevant state/territory or Australia.
