Renewable Energy Online Dashboard

Energy & Resources, Tools & Models

Background

Our energy system is changing. We are witnessing a shift to decentralised electricity generation from renewable energy resources coupled with an increase in energy storage, with generation plants ranging from small-scale behind the meter installations through to front of meter large-scale solar and wind.

The Victorian Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has been working to ensure that Victorians can benefit from the growth in renewable energy technologies. Building on the direction delivered by Victoria’s Renewable Energy Roadmap, project stakeholders were looking for a resource to support the development of Regional Renewable Energy Roadmaps which involved further community consultation in the development of individual renewable energy strategies for regions across the State.

Project Goals

The aim of the dashboard was to inform and engage with government, community, business and investor stakeholders in an easy to use online platform. The dashboard was to convey key attributes and statistics for individual regions across the State as well as a high-level economic impact tool which would enable users to model the impact of different technology types within their region.

REMPLAN’s Involvement

Working with a local design firm, REMPLAN’s in-house software development team prepared a custom-built website (online dashboard) that presented a range of information for all 48 local government areas in regional Victoria, five State Government regions and seven identified Renewable Energy Zones in Victoria. Information was presented through an interactive mapping interface as well as quantified indicators and statistics. The dashboard included:

  • Measures of renewable energy potential and available for each region relative to other regions.
  • Respective region’s access to key infrastructure.
  • Environmental considerations such as land use and dwelling density.
  • Economic and demographic statistics.
  • An economic impact tool allowing users to prepare a high-level (non-project specific) analysis of various renewable energy types within each region.

Results

The clients were provided with an attractive and easy to use dashboard that can be used to inform and engage with key stakeholders throughout the development of the Regional Renewable Energy Roadmap project and beyond.
