Background
Port Macquarie-Hastings is uniquely positioned, creating a compelling environment for investment across multiple sectors. The regions infrastructure, growth, and supportive policy frameworks present significant opportunities for sustainable economic development. REMPLAN initially prepared an Economic Development Strategy (EDS) for Port Macquarie-Hastings Council in late 2021. However, at the Council meeting in April 2022, Council decided to not adopt the EDS. Port Macquarie-Hastings Council is developing a new EDS and REMPLAN was commissioned to develop a new Opportunity and Gap Analysis report for the EDS.
Project Goals
The Opportunity and Gap Analysis update was prepared to inform the development of Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’s new EDS. Its purpose is to provide a contemporary evidence base to identify areas of current economic strength, sectors with future growth potential, and critical supply chain gaps. These insights can support regional self-sufficiency, job creation, and targeted investment opportunities.
REMPLAN’s Involvement
REMPLAN provided an update of the Opportunity and Gap Analysis report delivered initially in 2023. The updated analysis provides clear evidence base and economic insights which support the EDS’ future strategy development. REMPLAN conducted broad ranging desktop research, a suite of stakeholder engagement workshops and targeted industry sessions, and rigorous economic and demographic analysis using out inhouse software suite.
Results
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council was provided valuable insights and direction to support the key economic sectors. The Opportunity and Gap Analysis successfully identified areas for economic growth, economic strength, emerging opportunities, and supply chain needs. With this foundation, Council is well-positioned to drive sustainable growth, attract targeted investment opportunities, and support long-term regional resilience.
