2021 Census: Help your region receive the services and resources it needs!

Census night – Tuesday 10th August, 2021

As a diverse team of economists, demographers and economic development specialists, there are a few exciting occasions in our calendars. The 2021 Australian Census is one of them!

The Australian Census of Population and Housing is the largest and most reliable statistical collection by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) that provides comprehensive insights into who we are, and how we are changing over time.

Most countries around the globe run a Census to gather insights into their population. The United Nations recommends a census enumeration (count) at least once every ten years. We are fortunate in Australia to have a Census conducted every five years, with the previous occurrence being August 9, 2016.

The Census data provides key inputs into REMPLAN Economy and REMPLAN Community software and profiles. These resources play a role in supporting government, businesses and community organisations plan for positive economic outcomes and make decisions that target better investments. The Census data is critical for enabling evidence based decisions about community infrastructure, from schools, health care and childcare centres to roads and public transportation.

Over the past month, households across the country have started receiving their Census instructions and online code through the mail in preparation for Census night on Tuesday 10th August 2021. This is the first time in Australia’s history that you have a window to complete your Census form at a time that suits you, rather than a single night like previous years.

Why do I need to do the Census?

The 2021 Census is mandatory for all people in Australia, excluding only foreign diplomats and their families. If you decide not to take part, or submit an incomplete Census forms it may lead to a fine.

To avoid receiving a fine, everyone needs to complete, or be included on an Australian Census form on paper or online using the code provided by the ABS. The Census gives our population an opportunity to tell their story and help make a difference in their community.

The rich and valuable data gathered by the ABS Census of Population and Housing helps to build a picture of what our country looks like every five years, influencing where government funds are allocated.

What’s in the Census?

The 2021 Census, like previous years will ask questions on demographic characteristics such as population, sex and gender, households and families, income and work, education and training, housing, disability and carers, transport, and religion. Alongside these topics, the ABS has been authorised by federal parliament to include questions relating to long-term health conditions, and service in the Australian Defence Force.

Like every Census, it provides us with an insight into Australia at a specific point in time and will provide evidence of where population growth has fluctuated, the impacts of the pandemic on changes in employment, the degree of disadvantage across the country, and demand for social services such as age pension, and youth allowance.

What’s next?

The 2021 Census data will be released in stages, running from June 2022 through to early 2023. The REMPLAN team will provide updates as the data is released and comes available to clients via REMPLAN Economy and REMPLAN Community.

As a country-wide survey that counts the vast majority of our population, the data will be released for small-areas. This will allow you to explore and benchmark against previous years via the REMPLAN Region Explorer, and REMPLAN Community software and profiles.
