REMPLAN Data Update – 2017 Estimated Residential Population

We are pleased to advise that all REMPLAN public-access economic and community profiles have now been updated with the latest Estimated Resident Population (ERP) data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Estimated resident population (ERP) is the official estimate of the Australian population, which links people to a place of usual residence within Australia. This update includes the ABS’ recently released final estimates to 2016 and revised estimates for 2017. The table below shows the changes that have been made to the population data:

As part of this release the ABS has noted the following:

Australia’s estimated resident population (ERP) reached 24.6 million at 30 June 2017, increasing by 1.6% since 30 June 2016.

All states and territories experienced population growth between 2016 and 2017. VIC had the strongest growth rate, increasing by 2.4%, followed by the ACT (2.1%), NSW and QLD (both 1.7%). SA had the slowest growth (0.6%), followed by the NT (0.7%), WA (0.8%) and TAS (0.9%).

The area in Australia with the highest median age was Tea Gardens – Hawks Nest (62.4 years) in New South Wales.

The area in Australia with the youngest median age was Northern Peninsula (22.4) in Queensland.

The area with the highest proportion of males per 100 females was Howard Springs (294.1 males per 100 females) in Darwin.

The area with the lowest proportion of males per 100 females was Deakin (81.1) in the Australian Capital Territory.

The areas with the highest median ages tend to be popular retirement destinations. Many of the areas with the youngest median ages also had large populations of students or military personnel, or high proportions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The area with the highest proportion of males per 100 females is located in Darwin, the home of the Darwin Correctional Centre. High proportions were also found in areas with significant mining activity, in Western Australia.
