REMPLAN Data Update – 2018 Estimated Residential Population

We are pleased to advise that all REMPLAN public-access economic and community profiles have now been updated with the latest Estimated Resident Population (ERP) data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

ERP is the official estimate of the Australian population, which links people to a place of usual residence within Australia. This update includes the ABS’ recently released final estimates to 2016, revised estimates for 2017 and preliminary estimates for 2018.

Australia’s estimated resident population reached 24.9 million at 30 June 2018, increasing by 1.6% since 30 June 2017. According to ABS projections, the resident population of Australia has already reached 25.0 million.

Most states and territories experienced steady population growth between 2017 and 2018. The NT experienced a moderate population decline.

As part of this release the ABS has noted the following:

  • Capital city growth accounted for 79% of Australia’s total population growth.
  • The fastest growing city was Melbourne.
  • Most of Melbourne’s population growth was due to net overseas migration.
  • More people left Sydney to move to other parts of Australia than arrived from other parts of the country.
